3-FC Barcelona v. Atletico Madrid-6
When these teams last met, it was the SL1 Cup quarterfinals, with 10th place Barca upsetting their 2nd seed Spanish counterparts and going on to win it all. It was some consolation after a dreary league campaign, while also disappointing for Atletico, who closed out strong to finish 2nd and saw their shot at a trophy stolen by 10th place Barca, a bitter rival. Then Antoine Griezmann, Atletico’s career leader in goals, assists, match rating, and who knows what else, signed with Barca in 2019.
A beautiful Barcelona night set the stage for MD11, an electric start when Griezmann’s cross found Suarez yards from net, but the striker’s volley missed wide. The clubs traded chances thereafter, with Atletico getting the better of it, if only slightly. A Barca push just before half resulted in a corner and after some desperation to clear, Atletico was in open field, Yannick Carrasco beating the Barca defense to Thomas Lemar’s lead pass and burying it left corner, a crushing blow just before half.
Barca would answer quickly though, a cross from Messi to Suarez 10 yards from goal, turned into an aptly placed diving header Oblak had no shot at reaching, 1-1 in the 53rd. The chances grew scarce until a late attack by Atletico nearly pulled out a win, but ter Stegen was excellent under the barrage.
MD12: Barca at PSG in a doozy; Atletico at Bernabeu for Madrid Derby.
